Tie Dye!

I may have spent more time as a kid tie dying than other kids I knew. I have many memories of vats of RIT dye, yellow rubber gloves, and rubber bands. It was messy and a pain to clean up.

Tie Dye has come a long way since then and many different type of kits are available that take the headache out of it.

Here's the kit from Tulip that I bought:

Everything you need is right inside. The dye comes already in the bottle and all you have to do is add water and shake. The kit also comes with plastic gloves, instructions, rubber bands, and an extra round of dye. Just to give an idea, for the 4 shirts we dyed we had half of each bottle left over. When we were done I emptied, rinsed, and dried the bottles and now have a second round of dye to use for next time.

You will need something to dye though. Here's our shirts. Pre-wash and do not use any fabric softener or dryer sheets.

The boys went with the spiral technique which is made by pinching the middle of the material, slowly turning, then securing it with rubber bands. The finished result will look similar to a cinnamon roll.

Vaughn did a longways accordion fold then I helped her wrap rubber bands around her shirt every couple of inches. Her finished product looked like a segmented snake.

Again, no need to worry - techniques and instructions are included in the box.

I covered the garage floor then let them go at it. Keep plastic bags nearby so that when they are done you can throw the shirt in the bag to set.

I let them sit about 9 hours before taking the rubber bands off and throwing them into the washing machine. This has been the first time for me that the dye has bled and colored the white of the t-shirt. Oops! Not sure what happened but no one seems to mind.

Here's Vaughn's shirt and mine. I did a bullseye pattern.

Here are the boy's shirts.

I think they turned out really well! Next time I think I would like to try the Resist in addition to the tie dye. (A resist is when something is put on the material, like a wax, where the dye cannot soak through to.) It sounds like fun!

Now it's your turn!

Friday 5

Woof. It's been a week. Here's a few updates.

1. I'm still without my computer, but I get to pick it up today.

2. Our AC was fixed on Wednesday afternoon. Sleeping in your own bed? Nothing better.

3. The kids and I made tie dye shirts. I'll share the dirt on the dye next week.

4. Our bags were packed, boarding passes printed, and we were all set to leave town today for a little vacation. However, Vance has come down with something and isn't well enough to travel. Needless to say we're all pretty down. It happens.

5. Silver lining? We'll definitely be able to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremony now. I've printed off these adorable Olympic Bingo Cards to keep the kids occupied for opening night. Have you? Here's the link! I'm an Olympic Junkie. Can't wait!

Happy Friday! We'll be toasting to air conditioning, a fixed computer, and that Vance gets to feeling better soon! Cheers!

Squatters In The Family Room!

Vance and Vaughn watching Ninja Warrior

It looks like we're hosting squatters around here! A blowup mattress in the family room, sleeping bags in the office, and toothbrushes in the powder room.

On Monday afternoon our 2nd floor AC stopped working and we're in the middle of a heat wave, so it's not suitable for sleeping or doing much else.

Silver lining for the kids? They think this is the best thing EVER! A downstairs campout is actually on our Summer to-do list so, check! Done!

A repair man will be here tomorrow (Wednesday) and hopefully fix it so we can return to sleeping in our bedrooms and also regain our sanity.

To top things off, my computer died AGAIN on Monday night. (It died last week too and was brought to life by a Genius at the Mac store.) I brought it in to the Mac store tonight and this time they admitted her and they think they know what the problem is. If they're wrong then it's likely time for a new one. I should know in a couple of days.

So! Tie Dye pictures will have to wait! They turned out great and I'm excited to share them! I'm currently posting from Justin's PC and it takes me 10 times longer to do everything since it's so different from mine.

Hope everyone has a great couple of days! I'll be Tweeting and Instagramming since I'm without a computer, follow along if you'd like! (@charisadee)

Watermelon Slushies

The weekend is over, but making these will make your Monday better. No guarantees, but how could it make it worse?

Frozen watermelon, lime juice, and a banana is all it takes, but click HERE for the recipe and the how to.

If you're like me and don't have a fancy-pants blender you'll have to add a little vodka liquid for it to blend. (I used pomegranate-lime juice) We loved them!

A healthy remedy for hot days and hot kids.

If you make them, let me know how you liked them!

...............
On a side note, it's TIE DYING day here! Rubber gloves, rubber bands, kids, and bottles of dye! Things are about to get technicolor!

Happy Monday Everyone!

Friday 5

Taking a look back on 5 highlights of our week. Here we go!

We've been juicing more and playing around with different recipes. Here we have watermelon and cucumber. Even one cuke was too much for me and the kids. Surprising - you'd think because the cucumber's subtle smell it would also have a subtle taste.

Do you juice? What's your favorite recipe?

My laptop died. Definitely not a highlight, but noteworthy when looking back on our week.

Vance had his last game of the season. 100 degrees outside and the boys still played their hearts out!

Since I didn't have a computer to goof off work on I had to find something else to do around the house. I started Vaughn's curtains!

Thank goodness the Apple Store has a kids area. The iPad's occupied the kids while I had my appointment to see what was wrong with my computer. They didn't find anything terrible (phew!) and was able to get me back up and running! I'm back baby!

A Friday Extra!
Vaughn loves to swim and has come so far in these last 3 months of lessons. She's so much fun to watch - take a look!

Woof! It's been a busy week for us! We've had commitments the last 3 nights so we've eaten dinners on the run and have had the kids up way past their bedtimes. Tonight we're toasting to not having anywhere to be and are happy about eating dinner together as a family at home.

Cheers!

Device Trouble

My computer is dead.

Last night it gave me the middle finger the "white screen of death" and I can't get it to do anything. I've made an appointment with the Genius Bar, fingers crossed that it's an easy fix!

Weekend Update: Heat Advisory? Let's Go To The Zoo Edition!

...Saturday...

On Saturday I took the kids to the Firehouse for a tour.

Didn't know you could do that? Yes! Just give them a call and ask to schedule a tour. It's free! Firemen are the nicest! They give the kids free swag at the end! It's educational and you'll enjoy it too. I did!

...Sunday...

We have a track record of only going to the zoo when it's going to be in the upper 90's. This year is no different.

(I have no idea why we do this. It's horrible for all parties involved. Someone remind me to go in the fall. Or the spring. Really, any other time then the dead of summer.)

The new sea lion exhibit is open! In the picture above, see where the man with the backpack and sunglasses is? That's where I was when claustrophobia struck and I HAD TO EXIT THE TUNNEL OF DOOM LIKE NOW.

I did snap one picture before exiting.

We did watched the sea lion show too, which was only so-so I thought.

Baby Kenzie the elephant. So cute!

A rare picture of me and the kids. I'm usually the one taking the pictures so there's never any pictures of me, which I kind of prefer. I'm trying to get more comfortable on the other side of the camera. Here we are, all hot and sweaty!

We routinely celebrate a trip to the zoo with lunch at the Boat House, but yesterday it was too crowded. We opted for Vietnamese instead, clearly the Yin to the Boat House's Yang.

And just like that, it's Monday again.

Hope you had a great weekend!

Friday 5

It's Friday!

Here's 5 highlights from our week.

It's been a slow week around here. Clearly a sign that we're in the slump of mid-summer. Sometimes too hot to go out and all out of good ideas of things to do in.

There was a 2 hour Lego session at the house yesterday. I know there's lots of naysayers about the "girl" Legos, but Vaughn loves them!

The kids always put stuff in here for "safe keeping". I end up cleaning it out and just like that, something else finds its way inside. At this moment there were ping pong balls. We don't even own a ping pong table.

I've started exercising again and this spot on the floor seems to be where I collapse do my post-workout cool down. The light makes each wall look like a different color. This was the major reason that it took us so long to pick a paint color.

Not sure which child hides their pencil here but I've had my eye on it and it's been around for at least a month.

Vaughn loves making bracelets with this kit that she got as a gift. She also loves to stick the jewels everywhere else. On her clothes, her nails, her dolls...and then they fall off. I've been finding jewels in the most precarious of places this week!

Cheers to the weekend! Have some fun!

Progress in Vaughn's Room

I was at the breaking point in this project thinking that I'd never find the right fabric for Vaughn's curtains.

Then BAM! It smacked me right in the face.

* White background? Check!

* Bright colors? Check!

* Would match her pink duvet? Check!

* Something that didn't look too old for a 4 year olds room? CHECK!

What pushed me over the edge? The butterflies! Homegirl loves butterflies. (And mermaids. But I'll find a way to add something "fishy" somewhere else in her room.)
Poor camera pic - colors are brighter in person
But!
It only came in 36" bolts, meaning if I wanted to use it for curtains I would have to seam it together to make a 54" panel. Not out of the question, just extra work.

I didn't buy any at the store and decided to go home and consult with Google first. I quickly found an online store that carried it in the larger bolts but the pictures on the site made the background look more cream colored than white. I spoke with someone from the site and they confirmed it was an 'ivory' background. I went back and forth then just finally ordered it, hoping that what they were calling 'ivory' was what I was calling 'white'.

It was!

The fabric is exactly what I wanted. Now, it's time to make the donuts curtains! Then, decide what on earth to do with the dresser and nightstand! It's been a battle (still very much not done) and deserves a post of its very own. I'm not sure if I'm loving the yellow. More on that later!

Happy Thursday!

Back from the Beach

We're back from the beach.

There's not a boat drink or a palm tree in sight.

The only sand that I see is what's left in the bottom of the suitcases.

Sand on vacation? Great!
Sand when you're not on vacation? Not so great. Annoying actually.

*******
Today will be about:

Laundry

Groceries

De-sanding

Detoxing

Happy Monday to Everyone!

Friday Five

It's Friday!

Here's 5 highlights from our week.

Seeing Brave.

Fun at the kid's museum.

Boat drinks and fun by the pool.

Making castles at the beach.

 Lingering sand. Everywhere.

It's been a great week! Looking forward to the weekend.
Hope you've had a great week too!

Cheers to the weekend!

Perfect Polish Every Time!

Let's talk toes. And eyes. Funny how the two effect one another.

My aging eyes are making it hard to paint my toenails. (Really it's just a logistic problem. If I could get the two closer together, I'd be set.) I've been using this trick for awhile and thought I'd share.

All that's standing between your old eyes and Perfect Polish is  a cuticle stick, a Q-Tip, and greasy lotion.

Put some lotion onto a Q-Tip

Wipe it around your nail, being careful to not get it ON your nail. The polish won't stick to wherever the lotion is.

Use the cuticle stick to wipe away the extra.

That's all it takes! Plus, after your polish is dry rub in the lotion and it helps those dry cuticles!

Hope this little trick helps!
